Khirbat Ataruz is identified with the biblical Ataroth. It is located in the province of Madaba, Jordan. The site was inhabited during the Iron Age, Hellenistic, Roman, and Muslim periods. A Moabite temple dating from the middle of the 9th to the beginning of the 8th century BC was discovered on the site, which is related in the text that appears on the Mesha stele and to the Moabite conquest of Ataroth from the Gad tribe
